If there's one discovery we’d highlight in the world of wine this year, it would definitely be Owen Latta. The juice, the bottles, the labels - everything is highly captivating. The wines display phenomenal precision and attention to detail with the help of hands-off winemaking. Even though his wines are low to non-dos, they are some of the cleanest and most classic to come out of Australia. Every. Single. One of them. You can't expect less from a lad that started his career at the age of 14.
Western Victoria Chardonnay 2021
Faced with a fruit shortage from the 2021 vintage, Owen Latta and the Eastern Peake crew created a Western Victorian Chardonnay and Pinot Noir range, using both their own and sourced fruit from across five different regions. The results are tremendous - value in a premium context, with this tense, flinty Chardonnay beaming brightly.
Two Mile Hill Chardonnay 2021
A Chardonnay planted on rich volcanic soils, with the 2021 being the first vintage and getting 97 points from James Suckling straight off the bat! Scents of lemon verbena, butter, mint and white chocolate. Fine and succulent on the palate. The texture also is a bit shuddery, chops and chews with nice grip though. Very refreshing, unique in a way.
Sans Soufre 2022
This is 100% Pinot Noir with ZERO sulfites added. So fine-boned and fresh, pure and lovely. Bright, rose hip tea and cranberry tang, a lick of amaro-like notes too. It zips along nicely, hazy in texture, finishes cool and uplifting. It’s easy drinking, but shows plenty of interest to the drinker. Very charming, very light on its feet in a way. Loveable stuff.
Walsh Block Syrah 2020
Comes from a single vineyard just beside Owen’s property. Ferments in a large wax-lined concrete fermenter, then left unsulphered until after winter, then bottled with a small amount of SO2. Cool climate Syrah at its finest. Red cherry, smoky paprika characters, five-spice, some minty notes. An almost ‘pinosity’ to the texture and weight but for darker fruit characters.
