Before jumping the fence, James Erskine had carved out a formidable career as a sommelier, one that took him all across the world. While at the peak of his career, he formed an experimental wine group called The Natural Selection, with Sam Hughes, Anton von Klopper and Tom Shobbrook. Jauma produced its first wines in 2010 from McLaren Vale Grenache fruit. Erskine’s philosophy is very much down a natural line, with manipulation and additions shunned, excepting the occasional dusting of sulphur.
Fujisan 2022
A pet-nat made from 100% Chenin Blanc. Quite wild when just opened, with a hazy golden color in the glass. Aromas of peach, nectarine & mango jump straight out of the glass. The palate is glossy, with a tangy acid and just the right amount of bubbles you can ask for in a pet nat. If you have a day off and just want to chill at the pool or beach, this is your animal. Super good juice.
1000 Fires 2022
Chenin + Sauvignon Blanc. Aromas of Chenin dominate here – ripe peach, honey, yellow apple. Hints of sea salt and roasted nuts. Well-knit on the palate, concentrated, but juicy at the same time. Long finish. We see this going with nothing else but an anchovy pizza and rainy days of Netflix & chill. You just have to find somebody that likes anchovies.
Somewhere On Another Hill 2022
Sauvignon Blanc exercised into a very digestible form. It almost smells textural. Green papaya, mango, all underripe, hints of quince and dried sage. A bit of reduction and the texture is sandy and bitter with a yellow grapefruit tang. Crushed rocks type of minerality, a bit dusty and with yellow fruit spectrum. Orange wine with a powerful yet fine structure. Very enjoyable Sauvignon Blanc.
Origins 2022
Skin-contact Arneis from organically farmed fruit. James Erskine’s beautiful expression of this white grape, a classic of Piedmont, Italy. Yuzu, a slight umami chicken stock thing, almond, white flowers. It’s juicy with green pear and melon. Gentle bitterness, some chalky texture, a saline/savoury/oatmeal vibe, lemon zest, gin and tonic, and apricot on a finish of good length and grip.
Tikka the Cosmic Cat 2022
This is an 80/20 blend of Shiraz and Grenache. A summery, fragrant, sloshy red that gets a chill and is demolished with gusto – a new and needed currency in Australian wine. Smells of fresh mulberries, rose hip tea and sour cherries. Similar to taste. Vibrant, juicy, so lively and youthful to taste, but there’s even a chomp of good, chewy tannin to satisfy those seeking a little extra structure.
Audrey's Fairygarten 2022
Audrey's Fairygarten Shiraz comes from a dry-grown vineyard in Clarendon, McLaren Vale. The fruit underwent carbonic maceration, giving it a lovely pop of cherry cola and bright red berries with just the right amount of grainy tannin for balance. Shows some crisp edges, offers sweet fruit and an amaro twist. It’s gluggable, fun, delicious stuff. A chill and a riverside seat. Away you go.
