Orange wine gets its name from its unique color, which spans from light yellow to deep amber. It's made by leaving white wine grapes to ferment with their skins on, giving the wine its signature hue and tannic bite. Drinking orange wine is like taking a trip to the farmer's market in your mouth. You'll taste everything from dried apricots to chamomile tea to a hint of shoe leather (just trust us on that one). It's like a culinary adventure, with each sip leading you down a new flavor path.
In this Box you will get:
Weingut Schmitt Wild Pony 2022
Bianka and Daniel Schmitt's Wild Pony is fun. Made from Riesling, Silvaner and Pinot Blanc. The wildest curvé from the winery smells of ripe vineyard peaches, orange zest and honey. On the palate it has a fine acidity, a slight tannin kick and a nice length. Great drinking flow. German orange wine masterpiece.
Maloof Scrambled Sticks 2021
Aged in both neutral oak and amphora. Haunting citrus rind and beeswax perfume. Followed by ripe yellow apples, pears, quince and Mirabelle plums on the palate with mouthwatering chalky tannins. It’s all about texture and layers of flavours, from mineral base through fleshy crunchy middle and aromatic skinsy scents on top.
Escoda Sanahuja Mas del Gaio 2021
A blend of Parellada (50%), Garnacha Blanca (25%) and Macabeu (25%) - all coming from clay-calcareous soils. Macerated on skins for 10 days, then aged in amphora for 8 months. Herbal and zesty to start. Green papaya, raw ginger, green apple and salt. It’s chewy, with raw and salty elements to it. Well-made fuller style of a skin-contact wine.
Latta Precarious Blanc 2021
A blend of aromatic varieties - Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Viognier and Chardonnay. Fragrant thing, lots of honeysuckle and frangipani floral characters, a bit of sea spray, green apple, faint nuttiness. Tart and tangy to taste, quite racy and herbal in a way. Bit of lime and lemon on the finish again. Super pleasing, interesting textural white wine here.
The Hermit Ram Salty White 2022
The grapes come from organically farmed vineyards in North Canterbury and are fermented in whole bunches. Part of the blend is aged in stainless steel, part in amphora, and two barrels are filled and left untopped to develop a flor. These separate parts are then blended before bottling. Unfined and unfiltered.
Longarico All'Ombra dei Pini 2022
All’Ombra dei Pini is an orange wine produced from Catarratto grapes grown on high ground (650m altitude). Aged in French oak barrels for 8 months. Aromas punch! So much going on, loads of lemon, orange peel, grilled and smoky/flinty quality which is immediately very delicious. Salty acidity core, there’s a great deal of freshness to counterbalance the density.
