Pinot Noir is like the prom queen of the wine world - elegant, sophisticated, and always the center of attention. With its delicate and complex flavor profile, this grape variety is the ultimate diva of the vineyard. It's like a ballet dancer in a glass, gracefully twirling and pirouetting with every sip. But don't let its refined nature fool you - Pinot Noir can also be a bit of a rebel. With its unpredictable growing habits and finicky temperament, it's like the bad boy of the wine world. You never quite know what you're going to get with a Pinot, but that's part of the thrill.
Black Estate 'Netherwood' Pinot Noir 2020
A 10-5 clone of Pinot Noir coming from 3.8 ha of certified organic vineyards. Savoury aromas of earth and crushed twigs, dark moist compost soil. Opens to fragrant fruit and florals with some air. Mixed forest berries with a little spice. The palate follows the nose, savoury to taste, well-structured with grainy tannins and a crunchy acidic lift. Delicious.
Amadahy Nez de Clown NV
A few pay grades above rosé in colour, texture too. Perfume littered with sour cherry, brambles, sage leaf, a touch of mint and some faint game meat savouriness. The palate similar, silky but with a twist of fine tannin, bright, blood orange acidity and a beautiful evenness to it all in its lighter shade. Gluggable and yet fine wine paradigm in the same breadth. Impressive.
Borachio Pash Rash 2022
Blend of Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Savagnin & Chardonnay. Lively, refreshing style with tartness and green herbal character on high. Zesty, passionfruit meets grassy characters, a bit of pickle juice lending some zing and a general sense of drinkability and freshness. Not moving the dial for complexity much, but delivering a really pleasing, easy to get stuck into pet-nat.
Commune of Buttons Basket Town 2021
Presenting a Pinot Noir of delicate and floral character from the Basket Range, a wine that equally demonstrates concentration and elegance. Jasper Button, having harvested the fruit at an optimal early stage, ensures its gentle progression to bottling. This produces a wine that is both soft and pure, exuding charm and elegance, yet it carries an undertone of significant pinosity.
BK Wines ‘Carbonic’ Pinot Noir 2021
The Carbonic series never ceases to amaze us, such crunchy wines both white and red. This is 100% whole bunch Pinot from the Lenswood vineyard. In comparison to last year, which was leaning more to the Gamay-esque style, this now goes to a more savoury, northern Rhone Syrah type. Loads of stemminess on the nose accompanied by black berry fruit. Glou glou in every sense.
Clair Obscur L'Origine 2020
This is the cuvée that started everything for this domaine. It comes from a parcel in the village of Corpeau, planted in 1963, which Pierre inherited from his grandfather. The soil here is predominantly brown clay which gives a beautiful silky texture to the wine. Whole bunch, large oak used for aging. The fruit coats the palate, the tannins are very fine and frame it nicely.
