“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” ~ Mike Tyson
Sometimes you don’t feel like drinking those light, fluffy wines and reach for a heavy hitter instead. We’ve all been there – some with Barossa Shiraz, others with a heavily oaked Chardonnay. We love these wines – only if they’re made well. Taste our heavy favourites.
In this Box you will get:
Bodegas Moraza '4 Caminos' Graciano 2019
Graciano is a grape that gives wines which are moderately tannic, deeply colored and intensely perfumed. It’s mostly grown in Spain, but we’ve seen some plantings in other corners of the world as well (South Australia, USA and Portugal). Lots of character here, a good sense of crunch with ease of drinking.
Unico Zelo Tropo Big Red 2021
Tropo Big Red proudly showcases an abundant display of luscious blue fruit, elegantly balanced in this Syrah/Merlot blend. Delighting the senses, it presents a blast of herbal nuance and olive tapenade, a characteristic trait of Syrah. Meticulously crafted, the tannins have been artfully restrained to maintain a refreshing cool climate profile.
La Salada Fils de Maçaners 2021
Fils de Maçaners is a single-variety Sumoll, a native variety that has been in danger of extinction. An estate wine made as a tribute to an old vineyard called “Els Maçaners” that they can no longer cultivate but they did manage to take some cuttings to produce this wine. All vines are tended by hand, using biodynamic practices and no-till cultivation.
Fontaine des Grives Lutum 2020
A Merlot coming from clay soils, aged in amphora (hence the shape of the bottle). This is smooth and plush, like falling back into a purple velvet lounge. It’s too comfortable at times. Black and red fruit, bay leaf, mint, tobacco and baking spice. It’s a little dusty and sweetly spiced, but so succulent and easy. Grainy tannins, with a bright finish of excellent length.
Frederic Brouca Champs Pentus Rouge 2021
Grenache + Syrah + Carignan blend born and bred in Faugères, Languedoc-Roussillon. Spicy, dried herb and black olive, raspberry, pomegranate. Medium-bodied, distinctly sappy and herbal, a tamarind tang through strawberry and raspberry. Dry crunch of amaro and dusty tannin, juicy and frisky, with a punchy finish. Quite different in style to many a GSC, but in a good way.
Borachio Cantaria Vermut 2022
Cantaria, an Australian vermouth. Bright, fresh, perfectly sweet. Citrus driven with a flurry of herbs from the garden and a dash of native aromatics. Initial blends were far more into the amaro, bitter world. The final result takes more cues from the vermut bars of Barcelona, something to relax with, to wet the appetite.
