Anton Van Klopper is among the first natural winemakers in Australia with the first vintage in 2007. He makes wines from organically/biodynamically farmed grapes that go through a natural ferment. No chemicals are used in the winery, not even to to clean (only water is used and occasionally alcohol which he distills at the winery). He is committed to human health, leading him to make not just chemical-free wines, but wines with lower alcohol as well. Making natural wines that are sound is an art and a skill, but there is no better wine to drink!
Le Orangj Sauvignon Petillant 2022
Nothing says fun quite like a pet nat and this one from Lucy M is the perfect option for something a little bit more complex than your regular. All Sauvignon Blanc, the fruit gets destemmed before pressing into a ceramic egg to ferment for a couple of weeks before being bottled for just the right amount of fizz. Balanced citrus acidity, almonds and a gentle fizz. Fun for the sun.
Le Vilain Gris Petillant 2022
Pinot Gris is destemmed and left to rest for four days, allowing the juice to soak up the flavour, colour and a little tannin from the skins. It’s then pressed into 680-litre ceramic eggs and ferments for two weeks until there is the perfect amount of sugar to finish in bottle with a good level of spritz. Rich, ripe stone fruits dominate here with a floral twist on the finish.
Bianco 2022
Basket Range wines have a rep for pushing the explorative lo-fi boundaries, and this is no exception. Our fragrant friends Semillon (after a month on skins) and Sauvignon Blanc come together for a little rest in barrel to intertwine the quirkier sides of their personalities. Light, rolling texture and citrus goodness. Drinking pleasure.
La Sarriette 2022
Pinot Noir's mutant cousin, Pinot Blanc. This white has excellent texture. whole bunches of Pinot Blanc, presses them directly to large foudre and leaves the juice to age on its lees to impart a gorgeous, round texture. Lightly creamy mouthfeel, with flavours of savoury cashew nuts and zesty green apple undertones. Aroma and palate working together.
Tete d'Oeuf 2022
Destemmed Sauvignon Blanc, left to soak and start fermenting on berries for one month in an 800L ceramic egg, then the berries are removed then pressed and added back. A perfumed richness of Turkish delight served in a dank cave with beeswax candles flickering gently and enchanting games of chess being played by ‘the in crowd’, lucid fluidity coats and a harmonic rhythm on your tongue.
Dynamique 2022
Grown on sandy soils that definitely help preserve the lightness and fruitiness of this grape. The fruit was 100% whole bunch carbonic fermented for 4 days, then pressed to age in ceramic egg. Ultra-perfumed. Wow! So fragrant, strongly scented like vermouth or amaro, juniper, exotic herbs, alpine herbs, genever, red cherry juice. Crisp and refreshing red wine but so out of the box.
