What do you first think of when you hear someone talking about New Zealand? Lord of the Rings? All Blacks? The endless greenery? Only one thing comes to our minds; you guessed it - wine! This fascinating country has been making wines we've started to love over the years (and yes, that includes Sauvignon Blanc, Karen), coming from some of the most progressive winemakers in the Southern Hemisphere.
In this Box you will get:
Kunoh Narcissus 2021
Viognier + Sauvignon Blanc + Pinot Noir. Lots of flavour but in a medium weight frame. Dried apricot, cinnamon spice, honey toast, lemon going on. Slides over the palate with a slipperiness but finds a crunch and chalky chew of acidity in the mix. A fine, gingery finish that lingers with more of that dried apricot character. Offers up a pretty compelling gulpability.
Kindeli Primavera 2022
This aromatic blend inspires the bottled emulation of blooming springtime. On the nose, the wine exudes a beautiful perfume of florals like jasmine and lilies tied together prettily with scents of apples, honey, a hint of petrol and fresh minerality. Together, the Riesling and Chenin Blanc create a pleasant surprise of contrasting but seamless flavors of fruit, florals and herbs.
Mélange du Champ 2022
This bright and enticing orange is indeed a champ. Florals and gingery, spiced aromatics come forward and the palate is textural and lively. It’s produced from organically grown, co-fermented Gewurztraminer, Sauvingon Blanc and Pinot Gris. After 28 days of skin contact the wine was aged in old French puncheons.
The Hermit Ram Zealandia 2022
The varietal character here has been de-emphasised, but not at the expense of flavour. This is quite lovely. Slate, apple and passionfruit with a spicy, smoky, floral edge. It has good bite, ample-but-not-overdone texture, a steely/slatey feel and sound length. It’s good buying, and drinking – the latter of which we don’t say of too many Sauvignon Blancs.
Kindeli Luna Llena 2022
Red field blend of Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Fermented and aged in amphora. This is a pretty blend. It’s floral and the fruit has a sort of sweetness to it. Ample herb and spice notes around the edges. Black cherry, peppercorn and perhaps a dab of graphite character are in the picture as well.
Black Estate ‘Netherwood’ Pinot Noir 2020
Coming from the Netherwood vineyard that’s certified organic and biodynamic. Savoury aromas of earth and crushed twigs, dark moist compost soil. Opens to fragrant fruit and florals with some air. Mixed forest berries with a little spice. The palate follows the nose, savoury to taste, well-structured with grainy tannins and a crunchy acidic lift. Delicious.
